Due Date: 8 Mar, 1999
Mapping Conceptual Database Designs to Logical Designs
1. For the ER Diagram of the lecture notes (the Employee-Department-Project example), use the INFORMAL guidelines to convert the diagram into a relational database schema. For each of your relational schemas, indicate the primary and foreign keys.
2. Figure 1 shows a ternary relationship (Supplies) between Supplier, Part and Project entities. Figure 2 shows an equivalent set of binary relationships.
Figure 1. Ternary relationship SUPPLY

Figure 2. Binary relationships
(a) What needs to be added to Figure 2 to make it complete ?
(b) Show the cardinality constraints on the binary relationships.
(c) Show that the two ER diagrams are equivalent [Hint: to do so, you must show that each situation that can be represented by one diagram can also be represented by the other.]
