Prof. Ajay Joneja, Professor of IEDA Department and ISD Division, formed Sane Form Ltd. in 2013 with the support from HKUST Entrepreneurship Center – which specializes in the development and application of geometric optimization for rationalization of architectural designs. Prof. Joneja’s research focuses on shape modification on the architects’ surface and partitioning lines of the modern architecture with complex curved façades, with the goal of minimizing panel variations while deviating minimally from the architects’ intent. His algorithms have been applied to buildings designed by Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Aedas and Bing Thom, resulting in reducing the cost of fabrication of façade panels by a factor of three in the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal project; and saving ~3% in the panel fabrication and assembly costs after modelling and optimizing every visible external and internal façade surface of the XiQu Centre for performing arts, West Kowloon.
